We’re very excited to be starting our new blog and to be providing some timely information to our members and fans. For our first video blog I wanted to talk about wearables. You’ve likely heard the term wearable in reference to different pieces of tech but basically they are devices that can be worn on your body that help augment the human experience in some form or fashion.
- Apple Watch
- Amazon Alexa
Perhaps the most popular wearables are the ones with applications that have to do with health and fitness. You’ve got Fitbit® that helps track various activities like running, tennis, even weight lifting. Under Armor® has recently developed a smart shoe that helps optimize athletic performance when running.
From a company called Coros® we now have a smart bicycle helmet that in addition to tracking your milage and playing your favorite music with bone-conducting headphones also has collision detection and can send a message to your loved ones in the event you take a tumble while on a ride.
Why are all these important though? I’ll give you just two of many reasons:
Analytics from wearable tech could soon start to affect our health insurance rates! Insurance rates could start to use data from wearables to assess different health risk factors like a sedentary vs active lifestyle.
A phenomenon know as the Internet of Things which refers to the devices in the world that we use that are currently networked. They’re estimated to exceed 30 billion objects by 2020. Every aspect of how we live will start to necessitate some form of connectivity and it’s important that we understand how this can help us live more purposeful lives and how it will save us time and money (both things we like to do for our members at CACFit).
But all this comes with a warning of course. Technology is not the end all. Like fitness, it should simply be the means to an end. It shouldn’t dominate our lives or detract us from the things that really matter like our health and our loved ones. Being connected all the time to everything isn’t necessarily a good thing. So as with all things we need to maintain balance.
So that’s all for now and thanks for watching and please subscribe to our Youtube channel. We plan on having regular blogs on Healthy Behavior, Health and Fitness, Fitness and Technology. We hope you find value in our content. We certainly find value in each of you. Live Better-Live Fit.
